As a German who worked at an ice cream shop:
1) It depends on the kind of ice cream. They sell cream-based ice cream (such as vanilla, chocolate, cookies, stracciatella) and the fruity kinds of “ice cream” have a different base. Spaghettieis is made of vanilla ice cream and therefore is “real” ice cream.
2) Some Germans love ice cream in winter as well. One Italian shop owner in my hometown stopped closing his shop in winter and now has an additional winter menu. We love him so much for this. Now we can get hot cake served with ice cream – in winter!
3) My love for a cream-based “Eisbecher”* topped with fruit can not be put into words. It’s all the good things put together in one bowl.
