If I may, let me give you advice from someone who loves food, whose mom was a chef, but who tries very hard not to be a snobby culinary asshole:
Fuck Mcdonalds, Burger King, KFC, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, and their tier of fast food (for your purposes). They have their place as a very quick and cheap option for high calories– I eat it occasionally when I’m roadtripping or just need some food in my belly. None of them should be on your list of foods to eat in America. The vast majority of cities you visit will have local burger joints and mexican food places that will serve you delicious food for not much more than those lowest-denominator chain restaurants.
Depending on where you go, there will be regional or local food items you should definitely try. Cheesesteak in Philadelphia, Hot Dog in Chicago, BBQ in the south, Mexican in California/Southwest. What’s on your list?
